Join us for Art Committee Conversations with Betty Swinton at 3:30 pm in the Large Meeting Room on Ogata Kōrin’s Irises at Yatsuhashi. Painted after 1709 by Ogata Kōrin (1658-1716) in a style created by the artist of brilliant coloring and strong decorative patterning that has come to characterize Japanese art, this work is the left half of a pair of six panel folding screens (each screen six by twelve feet). In addition to its visual impact, it makes explicit references to an episode in a tenth century classic of Japanese Court poetry instantly recognizable by any literate viewer of the time.
