BFM Concert: A Far Cry
April 16 @ 3:00 pm
The Brookhaven Friends of Music presents a string quartet from the Grammy-nominated chamber orchestra A FAR CRY, at 3:00 pm in the Performance Hall and streaming. Performers are Miki-Sophia Cloud and Clara Kim, violins; Grace Takeda, viola; and Rafael Popper-Keiser, cello. The quartet’s program, Legacy of Love, explores the connection between Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a composer of mixed-race birth, and his African-American namesake, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. We’ll travel from Taylor’s England to Perkinson’s America, using their two quartets—from the rich chromatic sonorities of the first quartet to the bolder and brighter ones of the second. We’ll also hear a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Perkinson’s swaggering “Cakewalk” for solo fiddle. As we travel, we will encounter the bonds that tie the composers together.
