The Brookhaven Friends of Music is delighted to present the Lydian String Quartet at 3:00 pm in the Performance Hall and streaming. The ensemble, hailed by Alan Rich of the Los Angeles Daily News “as one of the country’s superior chamber groups,” will perform Haydn’s Quartet in Eb Major, Op. 77 No. 6 and Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 135. Both are late works. In both cases, they deviate sharply from the compositions that precede them. The first movement of Haydn’s quartet is the only one of 68 that consists of a theme with variations, rather than the more traditional sonata-form. As for Beethoven, after a series of expansive quartets with five, six, or seven movements, his last quartet, Op. 135, reverts back to the classical model of four movements, yet still retains the complex part-writing he developed in his later years.
