BLC Lecture: Peter Temin – A Market Economy in the Early Roman Empire

September 14, 2022 @ 7:30 pm

The Brookhaven Lecture Committee invites you to hear Peter Temin on A Market Economy in the Early Roman Empire. Peter Temin, Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at MIT, will take us back to the time of the Romans. A world-leading historian of economics, Prof. Temin will address the question, did the early Roman Empire have the same kind of market economy that we regularly encounter today? This question has been an object of study for at least the last century, marked by the primitivist/modern debate, also called the Finley debate, following that historian’s famous lectures, The Ancient Economy.  He will define the concept of a “market economy,” and see if it fits the evidence we have for the early Roman Empire. Join us at 7:30 pm in the Performance Hall and streaming.
