Art Committee Conversation: Betty Swinton on A Modern Japanese Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi, Painter, Printmaker, and Entrepreneur
March 1, 2022 @ 3:30 pm
The Art Committee invites you to a conversation with moderator resident Betty Swinton about A Modern Japanese Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi, Painter, Printmaker, and Entrepreneur at 3:30 pm in the Large Meeting Room. Yoshida Hiroshi was a leading figure in the Shin Hanga (new print) movement of the early twentieth century. Shin Hanga combined some Western artistic conventions with the traditional collaborative techniques of ukiyo-e printing. Trained in Japan in Western style oil painting and watercolor, Yoshida lived and traveled in America in1899 and again from 1903 to 1907. In December 1923, after the great Tokyo earthquake of that September, he traveled to the United States to sell paintings and prints to help recover from its devastating losses.
