BFM Concert: Jonathan Cohler, clarinet; Hazel Dean Davis, horn; Rasa Vitkauskaite, piano

March 27, 2022 @ 3:00 pm

The Brookhaven Friends of Music enthusiastically presents Jonathan Cohler, clarinet; Hazel Dean Davis, horn; and Rasa Vitkauskaite, piano, performing Trios by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) and Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) at 3:00 pm in the Performance Hall and streaming. Sharing the same lush harmonic vocabulary as well as extreme technical difficulty, both Trios are unusual in that they were written for horn (in Brahms’s case, for horn without valves).  Reinecke’s Trio was composed for clarinet; in the Brahms, clarinet will substitute for violin. Brahms and Reinecke were acquaintances.  While Brahms concentrated on his work as a composer, Reinecke spent many years as the conductor of the famed Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, as well as the teacher of such pupils as Grieg, Bruch, and Janacek, with most of his composing occurring in later years.
