BFM Concert: Students from Project STEP

April 10, 2022 @ 3:00 pm

The Brookhaven Friends of Music presents a virtual concert by the talented students of Project STEP, enhanced by the presence of an administrator and advanced student to speak live with us about their experience with Project STEP. This special concert commemorates the speech on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. known for its inspirational line “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” in which King challenged the United States to live up to its ideals.  Small ensembles comprised of intermediate and advanced students will perform musical pieces that have connections with Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. The program will include spirituals and pieces that signify the struggles certain people or populations have faced, as we aim to amplify the human experience through performing and sharing music. Project STEP locates talented young people from ethnicities underrepresented in classical music, primarily Latinx and Black. We transform children’s lives by providing them with a depth of training, support, and opportunities they would probably not have access to otherwise. This year, Project STEP’s Core Program is supporting 52 children who show strong musical aptitude but face obstacles in their pursuit of high-level musical studies. Join us on Zoom at 3:00 pm.
