Brookhaven Friends of Music is delighted to sponsor Vento Chiaro’s return to Brookhaven at 3:00 pm in the Performance Hall and streaming. This stellar wind quintet offers a varied program of differing national flavors, all bound together by a theme of energy and delight. The program opens with J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto, originally written for two-manual harpsichord and adeptly transcribed for wind quintet, which is filled with good humor and vitality. Sao Paulo-based Ronaldo Miranda’s “Variações Sérias” incorporate Brazilian dance rhythms and tonalities into its set of variations on the tune of another Brazilian composer, Anacleto de Medeiros. The program closes with French composer and flutist Paul Taffanel’s beloved Quintet, featuring lyrical and virtuosic writing for each of the five instruments. Taffanel is a master of wind writing, and his quintet is a charming romp through the late-Romantic musical landscape.
