BLC Lecture: Michael Sandel – The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good?

September 28, 2022 @ 7:30 pm

The Brookhaven Lecture Committee invites you to hear Michael Sandel on The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good? To address our deeply polarized politics in the US today, we must rethink familiar attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. So argues Michael Sandel, drawing on his recent book The Tyranny of Merit: Can We Find the Common Good? These attitudes, he suggests, reflect the dark side of a seemingly attractive ideal: the principle of meritocracy. In recent decades, those who have landed on top have come to believe that their success is their own doing, and that those who struggle deserve their fate as well. Sandel offers an alternative way of thinking about success–more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conducive to an ethic of humility, solidarity, and the common good. This program will feature a brief lecture by Professor Michael Sandel of Harvard University.  There will then be a panel discussion with Jane Mansbridge and Bob Keohane, followed by Q&A. Join us at 7:30 pm on Zoom.
