CL talk: Elke Jahns-Harms: A Country Stroll with Beethoven: Exploring the 6th Symphony

August 16, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for a CL talk with Elke Jahns-Harms on A Country Stroll with Beethoven: Exploring the 6th Symphony at 10:30 am in the Large Meeting Room. Beethoven’s 6th Symphony depicts a peaceful summer day in the countryside, complete with babbling brooks, lilting birdsongs, dancing peasants, and dramatic thunderstorms.  It helps cement Beethoven’s reputation as a revolutionary composer, constantly pushing the boundaries and breaking the “rules” of classical music. Why was this symphony – and its composer – so groundbreaking?  We’ll spend about half the session listening to the music, interspersed with discussions on the composer, the cultural and historical context, and the story depicted in the piece.  Whether the terms “major” and “minor” make you think of Bach or baseball, whether you are a lifelong fan of classical music or are still wondering what all the fuss is about, this session is for you!
