STEM Lecture: David Cooper – Isaac Newton’s “System of the World”

September 20 @ 10:30 am

The STEM Lecture: Isaac Newton’s “System of the World” by resident David Cooper will be given at 10:30 am in the Performance Hall and streaming. The title of this STEM lecture is taken from the third section of Isaac Newton’s major work which we know as Principia. This is where he uses his astounding mathematical skills to unveil the secrets of the universe and of nature. Newton’s revolutionary ideas changed the way we think about the world even now. In two and a half years this young, quarrelsome, small-town farmer taught himself mathematics; he went from student to become a leading innovative mathematician. He paved the way for modern science. How did he do that? In this, his third talk about 18th century British science and technology, David Cooper will illustrate the way in which Isaac Newton was innovative and imaginative and courageous. By the way, there will be some mathematics but nothing that will be uncomfortable to anyone in this amazing Brookhaven audience
