STEM Lecture: David Fraser – A Puzzling Native American Bag: Sleuthing across Cultures and Disciplines

February 16 @ 10:30 am

The STEM Lecture: A Puzzling Native American Bag: Sleuthing across Cultures and Disciplines by resident David Fraser will be given at 10:30 am in the Performance Hall and streaming. Decorated fiber bags are important emblems of women’s expertise among several Native American tribes in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. David Fraser will describe how he used signal detection theory and textile structural analysis to pursue a previously undocumented version of these bags — while attempting to avoid the cultural pitfalls of an Anglo man interrogating Native American women’s art.
