STEM Lecture: Stephen Senturia – Earthquakes and Tsunamis

March 15 @ 10:30 am

The STEM Lecture: Earthquakes and Tsunamis by resident Stephen Senturia will be given at 10:30 am in the Performance Hall and streaming. Stephen Senturia has a PhD in Physics from MIT, where he taught for 36 years in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He has had a long-standing hobby-level interest in the geology that surrounds us. Today’s lecture is on Earthquakes and Tsunamis. Tectonic plates can crack or slip past one another, and when that happens, enormous sound waves that reach the surface literally cause the earth to “quake” under our feet. That motion, if it occurs under water, can also create giant compressive waves that grow into tsunamis when they reach shore. This lecture concludes the series on “The Restless Earth.”
