CL Lecture: Laura Prichard – Handel in London & Dublin

July 26, 2022 @ 7:30 pm

Speaker for Boston Baroque and the Masterworks Chorale, Laura Prichard will return with a virtual talk on Handel in London & Dublin at 7:30 pm on Zoom. When George Frideric Handel (composer of Messiah and Water Music) crossed the English Channel the first time in 1710, London was the second largest city in Europe. How could a simple musician befriend three generations of monarchs and die a rich man? Handel transformed the London public’s love of Italian opera (he premiered 27 in London alone) into a new audience for concert oratorios. In both the British capital and in Dublin, hired both male castrato singers and controversial women to star in his productions, improvised on great organs, and met choristers for beers in nearby taverns. Handel even became a British citizen and was honored with a grave in Westminster Abbey. We will revel in Handel’s masterworks, walk in his actual footsteps (from his home in London to St. George’s where he attended church for decades) and explore the Dublin neighborhoods where he lived.
