The STEM Lecture: Wanderers: Measuring the Heavens in the Eighteenth Century by resident David Cooper will be given at 10:30 am in the Performance Hall and streaming. Our view of the Heavens dramatically changed in the hundred-plus years leading up to the mid Eighteenth century. No longer was the Earth seen as the center of the Universe. That new paradigm resolved great questions. But others seemed intractable. David wants to explore how one of these questions was addressed, and will discuss the astonishing expertise achieved using the simplest of equipment, the extraordinary intellectual bravery in tackling this issue, and the frustrations and setbacks along the way.
